Writing for search engines

Writing metatags and page copy for maximum exposure at search engines

The title and description of your site shown by search engines to potential visitors must be interesting, truthful and focused.
If they arent interesting or catchy, they will be ignored. If they arent truthful and focused correctly on the content of the page then the visitor will realise this and return to the search results.

Page title
Meta keywords
Meta description
Initial page heading and other header tags
Body copy
Link tags
File name
Domain name
Image name and ALT description

Page title - make minimum of 60 characters, max 90. Get point across and include keywords in first 60.

Meta keywords - be exact, just main keyword/phrase.

Meta description - 150 - 200 chars, get point across in 140. Include main keyword plus synonyms & general kwds. Do not repeat title in description (will show in results twice).

Initial page heading - format with <h1> - 40 - 80 chars - does not contain title. May be used as search engines title. Can split description tag between heading and opening lines of first paragraph.

Body copy - starts with second part of description tag (or variation of) as this may be used as search engines description in place of descr tag.
