If you have a blog (or any other website for that matter) you need to connect with your visitors and readers with an ‘About’ or ‘About Me’ page.
The two main purposes of an ‘About Me‘ page are to:
- Engange and connect on a personal level with your reader
- Build your readers confidence in your knowledge.
The four things I consider essential for any ‘About me’ page are:
- Photograph and/or Avatar; A photograph is another boost to the connection that your reader feels that they have to you. If you’re a bit ugly or paranoid or whatever and don’t want to have a detailed photo of yourself put up on the web, then why not try an arty shot. I use an avatar in most forums I visit, unless your site is themed to incorporate your avatars design in some way then it should be included in your About Me page. If you haven’t got a custom avatar, why not get one?
- Qualifications and Experience; You should include details of you qualifications and experience in any fields you will be dealing with on the blog. For example; a SEO might like to say that he has been optimizing pages since 1996 and has worked with companies such as Amazon and eBay; a reality TV commentator might like to say they got hooked watching the first series of Big Brother and have spent 18 hours a day sat infront of the TV eating fried chicken ever since.
- History; Your background (and the background of the blog) are important to the reader. Some small personal details help engage your reader. If there are similar details in your backgrounds this builds empathy – its another great way to ‘connect’.
- Raison d’etre; Why are you blogging? What are you so passionate about that you thought you should tell the world?
Note that some blogs warrant two about pages; one about the blog, and one about the author. If the blog is a collaborative effort then each contributor may like to have an ‘About Me’ page, which can be linked from their name at the start or end of their articles, much like a profile page on a forum.
