This summer I have been training for my Surf Life Saving Australia Bronze Medallion with a squad at Narrabeen Beach surf club.
On Thursday we went to Manly surf club and joined up with Manly Bronze Squad for our written exam and practical tests in first aid, CPR, signals, radio operation etc. We all breathed a sigh of relief as everyone passed the tests, and focused on the skills test on Sunday.
On Saturday I went to the club for our regular training session to find that the conditions were quite tough. Yesterday (Sunday) they were even tougher! The Manly guys came to our beach to do the water test, their faces were a picture when they arrived and saw the size of the swell
We all managed to pass the tests (except Joss from Manly was unfortunatly hospitalised whilst trying to carry out a board rescue) .The run-swim-run was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do! Three months ago when we started training I wouldn’t have been fit enough to complete it.
Joining up with the surf club has been great for me - I have got fitter, become safe in the water, learnt some useful first aid skills, and most importantly made some great new friends. I’m looking forward to my first day in the uniform out on patrol. Watch out for the pics of me in my purple budgie smugglers coming soon

My pal SEOidiot hits 33 today. He’s done a cartoon on his blog of a SEO/spammer workstation… I’m not sure whos it is (it can’t be Pauls cos the guy in the toon has got hair), but it looks an awful lot like mine:

That’s pretty tidy for me (afterall I have only been here a month). Anyway, Happy Birthday Paul… next time I’m in Preston the beers are on me.

Most butchers in Australia only produce beef sausages, which are ok I guess, but not as good as proper pork sausages. We visited our local award-winning butcher The Snagman yesterday ~ he turns out sausages in many different guises and he is truely proud of his produce. We had a few of his pork snags on the barbie yesterday ~ very nice indeed. Looking forward to collecting our Christmas order on Friday.

So today I took my first swim at North Narrabeen Rock Pool. It’s about 5 min away by bike, and is really popular with the locals first thing in the morning ~ I can see why too, its a great way to start your day. The water was a bit chilly (one thing about being a pom is that you’re used to heated pools). The pool has a sandy bottom and stays shallow all the way out. I’ve promised Anne that I will take her for brekkie at one of the several great looking cafes along Ocean Street if she comes with me tomorrow
Another hot day coming…

Check out our new barbie! As everyone knows, Aussies are the kings of bbq. This is the biggest, baddest stainless barbie I could realisitically put on our balcony - it took two of us to carry up the stairs and nearly a day to assemble. As well as having four burners and two different plates it has a large ‘wok-burner’ hob built in to the right-hand shelf. I even have a matching apron and utensils (more photos to follow).
